‘The Alternative’

Hello Everybody,

Last Friday we sat together with a small group (1/3 of all) of ‘explorelabbers’ and discussed ideas for the workshop we want to hold together.
Because of the fact that our own initiative is really important within Explore Lab we thought of an alternative for the ‘exchange way’ of doing the workshop (we go somewhere, they return the favor).

The alternative consists of an architectural journey (outside of Holland in a not so obvious country, any proposals?) of around two weeks, where for a period of 3-4 days a group (4-5 persons) gets to lead the workshop and activities which they planned/prepared beforehand. The workshops will all touch a general architectural idea (so that it is interesting for everybody’s project), like perception, space, etc,. During this time we will visit interesting projects/places dealing with the themes of the workshops. And get to know each other quite well…

Our proposal is to further work on our alternative idea, with everybody who can come on the 28th of august (a Thursday) at 20:00h at the sports facility bar of the University in Delft.
Everybody is then invited to discuss and enhance the plan. For those who can’t make it that Thursday we will present the alternative on the first meeting with Explore Lab (probably the first week of September) This presentation is to open up discussion, of course other presentations, alternatives and idea’s are welcome!

We want to plan this early because an important part of the alternative way of doing the workshop is that we will get to know each other much better early on.

So an important part of our proposal is to schedule/plan the workshop in the first two weeks of October (the weeks after P1 ) If somebody already knows he or she can’t join, then let us now as soon as possible!

Daan, Lotte, Lilith, Robert, Elsbeth, Lieke, Chris

So join 28-8-2008, 20:00 at the sports facility bar in Delft

    dear all,
sounds like a really interesting idea! Im completely in favor for this proposal. Th only thing that is worrying me a little bit is the fact that in october I have to prepare the presentation of a left over course that starts in september.
I didn’t start yet with this course, so also don’t know exactly when we will have presentation, but just thought need to tell in advance. As soon as I know more, I can tell if I’ll be able to join. To generate some ideas about it, go to http://www.checkinarchitecture.com
Basically it’s a digital archive of documentaries, movies, reviews and other stuff collected by students that travel around the ueropean continet to investigate folds in urban space. It’s quite interesting, so check it out!

    Hi guys,

Sounds like a good idea! The only problem is that I will be in India for my research until November 15 and I think more people will probably have the same problem. What I understand is that the trip is planned in October to also get to know each other a bit better. Maybe it’s a nice idea to divide the two? In a way that we get to know each other better earlier, for example in the beginning of September (see proposal by Lotte on the mail), and then do the trip in a later stage of the research or even in the beginning of the design phase… Let me know what you think, I’ll try to be there Thursday in the evening.

    Cheers,

    Daan

    Hi guys,
I like the overall idea about the architectural journey.
How about Denmark? Inspiring architecture http://www.mimoa.eu/browse/projects/Denmark and it always seemed to me a bit left out in the Scandinavian context or Provence, France with an intersting mix of contemporary buildings (e.g.Natinal Choreographic center, Aix-en-Provence http://www.miesbcn.com/finalistes07/094.html, http://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/en/article-imprim.php3?id_article=6474 and beautiful scenery, plus the weather’s still going to be agreable in October for the workshop activities held outside.

A refreshing idea to overthink the way of exchange! This could idd be much more explored, i think, I mean the possibilities of exchange.. could be also an interesting theme..

Maybe we don’t make it in time, but could be very helpful for the main project to organize the workshop even before p1.. so we could use the time as starting up/inspiration source.

    I’ll be there next thursday!

The nations of the former sovjet-block sounds also interessting. I hope the meeting will be succes. I cannot attend tonight because of other obligations. Good Luck, and until monday.

  6. In the newest A10 there is an overview of new croatian architecture seems really interesting too. Lets ad Croatia to the list of possible objective.
